But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,

Have you looked at your life recently?

Do you recognise that you are a sinner?  None of us likes to admit our failings and look back on what we have done in the past, but would you be happy to lay your life open to the scrutiny of someone else?  If not, why not?

Are you truly ashamed of your behaviour and the things you've done in the past?

To repent means to feel truly guilty for past actions and deeds and true repentence must be accompanied with a desire to change and not repeat these things. 

Repentence is an earnest desire for change and cleansing.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

A great many people think (falsely) that their lives have to be spotless before they can come to God.  This is what the devil wants us to believe.

Those who think they're not good enough to be Christians should think on this verse:

Christ came to save sinners. 

The only good person who has ever lived and is alive today is Jesus.  He died so that we could live. 

We are all drowning and Jesus has thrown us a lifeline.  Why would anyone refuse to catch it and hang on?

Unfortunately we live in a culture of blame.  We blame anything from bad childhood, phobias, illnesses, wrong choice of friends, poor schooling, etc. for our actions.
